From “the center of research and Environmental Studies Group” (GEA) at Escuela Tecnológica Instituto Técnico Central, was proposed to seek a solution to the problem of supplying fresh and clean water for certain regions of the country, where rainfall and sources drinking water supply. For this reason, the project Self-sustaining Prototype Condensed Obtaining Drinking Water from the Environment Humidity is formulated.
Through inverse engineering methodology, a window air conditioner that works with refrigerant R22 was modified, then 37.5 liters of water were condensed in 24 hours of operation with a power consumption of 24.13 KW- h, test executed in Bogota. With another device that worked on San Andres Island, A/C that works with R410a, 24.84 liters of water were obtained in 15.61 hours and had a consumption of 8.36 kW-h.
In the research also it was established that the water condensed by air conditioning systems in the regions understudy, is drained into sewer: it is not used, because the popular belief is considered the condensed water as a “toxic” product that affects health. In response, condensed water samples to tests were taken; the results showed that it is not toxic and could be purified, being suitable for human consumption. This other source of fresh water can solve partly the shortage in the aforementioned regions
